IDENTITY - SCENE FOUR

DAD
I won’t listen to this. The Bible says-

MIKE
To love. It also says that some are meant to fertilize the Earth and some are meant to subdue it.

DAD
Where’s it say that?

MIKE
In Genesis Dad.

DAD
You can’t interpret that to mean it’s Ok to suck cock. God didn’t make you this way.

MIKE
The Bible has been interpreted many different ways.

DAD
You are going to burn for this.

MIKE
Forgive him father, for he knows not what he says.

(DAD punches MIKE. MIKE stumbles, but then looks at him offering the other cheek. DAD is shocked and runs off)

MOM
Are you ok?

MIKE
Yes. For the first time I am OK.

MOM
Well… I’m glad.

MIKE
But…

MOM
Nothing.

MIKE
Come on Ma. Just tell me.

MOM
I can’t believe you!

MIKE
Why?

MOM
You would join that church after what they did to me? Your father walked out on me and they treat me like I did something wrong.

MIKE
WAIT STOP THE SHOW! I MEAN IT! There needs to be a scene here didn’t I give you the new stuff? Fucking directors, so unreliable. Mom makes no sense right now, so I gotta let them see why she hates the church. Now just give me a second and we’ll move on (I will move MOM and DAD into positions as they’re like robots)Now we’re ready (Snap)

MOM
Forgive me father for I have sinned it has been eight years since my last confession.

PRIEST
JESUS CHRI – I MEAN that’s a hell of a long time.

MOM
I know father, I’ve just had a lot going on.

PRIEST
That’s no excuse to God. Anyway, why are you here now?

 MOM
Well you see father my husband just asked for a divorce.

PRIEST
Oh yes Warren, how’s his softball team doing?

MOM
Great, but about my divorce. He’s leaving me for another woman. I don’t know what to do.

PRIEST
It’s your duty to make your marriage work.

MOM
Yes, I know but -

PRIEST
Are you keeping him happy?

MOM
I think so.

PRIEST
Performing your wifely duties?

MOM
Yes, whenever he wants.

PRIEST
Then your marriage should be fine.

MOM
What about the other woman?

Priest
Sometimes it’s best to turn the other cheek. After all divorce carries much weight in the eyes of the church. I needn’t remind you of the loss that you will suffer if your marriage fails. The church would hardly be a place for someone who’s soul is blackened with sin.

MOM
But it’s not my –

PRIEST
Go forth an pray. Do not mention this to anyone.

MIKE
Ok. So now that that’s done we can continue. I hope everything else in this play is right. (Ill move MOM back into place)

MOM
You would join that church after what they did to me? Your father walked out on me and they treat me like I did something wrong.

MIKE
Mom, I don’t like what those people did to you, but they are just people. Not the religion itself.
